When is the best time of year to go sailing in Croatia?

So you know you want to go sailing in Croatia, and you’ve already found yourself the ideal charter yacht or catamaran in Croatia on PlainSailing.com – but you’re not sure when to go? Read about a typical sailing season in Croatia below and then make up your own mind!

The sailing season in Croatia runs from March-ish until November-ish each year - although you can sail earlier or later in the year, and you could even sail over Christmas and the New Year if you wanted - by special request.

Here's a year in the life of the Croatian sailing season, to help you to choose when to book your next trip out in the Adriatic!

March/April in Croatia

 MARCH / APRIL

This is the off-season, so you’ll find amazing value prices for fancy yachts and catamarans in Croatia (use the pink box to search and you’ll see what I mean!), and the marinas will be empty – but the sun isn’t warm enough to guarantee t-shirt weather, and jumping into the sea is only for the (very) brave.

May/June in Croatia

 MAY / JUNE

The temperature in Croatia starts to pick up by mid-May (up to a nice level of hot) so it’s the perfect time for an early summer getaway. The number of tourists also rises (but it’s still by no means crowded), as does the price you’ll pay to charter a yacht or catamaran. The sea doesn’t really get to a nice temperature for swimming until early June, but you’ll only feel cold for the first minute or two before it’s glorious – and there’s sunshine to help you dry off!

July/August in Croatia

 JULY / AUGUST

The temperatures max out in July and August, when they can be a bit toasty (but not quite as swelteringly hot as Greece, courtesy of the Maestral). School holidays kick in across Europe, which means prices are also at their peak, there’s a lot more kids frolicking on the beaches, and almost all the charter boats are out on the water – Dubrovnik regularly sells out every single one of its watercraft! It’s a wonderful time to be alive, and there’s plenty of joyful holiday atmosphere.

September/October in Croatia

 SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER

If you want a heady mix of sunshine, warm seas and lower prices, then mid-September is probably the optimum time to charter – it’s only three or four weeks since the height of summer (so the weather is still good), but everyone is back at school or work (and starting the trudge towards Christmas), so there’s space in all the marinas, restaurants and bars. Perfect!
